pahoehoe is the more smooth lava flows. a'a is the very jagged, sharp lava.
This is pretty easy to answer. The fact is that no matter how smooth a surface appears to the naked eye, at the microscopic level there are bound to be imperfections. Think of a glassy smooth marble - it rolls effortlessly (almost!) and feels smooth but if you look at it under a microscope, you will see many imperfections, jagged edges and cracks.Similarly, a glass slab has these imperfections. Over a large area of the slab, these will cause a large frictional force that becomes obvious when you try sliding them against one another.
Not all rocks are jagged. However the evolution of the river is continuous and 'rocks' are being broken-off all the time by the water, erosion, weather etc. Of course as 'rocks' are moved along by the force of the water that can make them 'jagged'.

seeing as comets are just bits of huge rock. Comets can be smooth, jagged, bumy, or a combination of all 3
Mountains are jagged because that is how they are formed. As they get older, erosion will begin to smooth them out so they appear rounder.
Wind and water erosion makes the mountains smooth.

A glass fracture due to heat will be a jagged line not a smooth and fairly strait crack. It will happen on annealed or laminated glass especially if they are tinted. It occur when a partial area of the glass is exposed to the sun and the rest is in the shadow creating a thermal stress. Didier Chevalier Owner of American Art Glass Co. in Los Angeles
