I had surgery a few months ago. About two weeks before admission I was put through a series of tests including:

Blood pressure

Height/Weight/BMI

Electro-cardiograph

Blood and urine tests

Blood typing in case I needed a transfusion.

Plus a lot of form filling with very detailed questions on previous and current health, how much exercise I do, current medications, dental problems, false teeth and crowns, any prior surgery and any prior anaesthetics. I was asked if I gave consent for a transfusion should it prove necessary, and I was also asked to describe the sequence of events leading up to me needing the surgery in the first place!

The whole process took about two hours and was very thorough.

Incidentally, if you're like me and the very thought of surgery freaks you out, then this is a good opportunity to ask in advance for a relaxing pre-med on the day of the operation.
