It depends on what the coins are.

If any of them are collectible, the value depends on the coin's denomination, mint mark, date, and condition. To know that you'd have to sort through the coins, of course.

If they're all common date silver (e.g. dimes and quarters from 1955-64, etc.) their value is determined by the price of scrap silver. Check a site like coinflation.com for current scrap silver prices - they change every day so any answer here would be out of date almost immediately.

If you go to one of those "we buy old gold and silver" places you'll get about 50% of the scrap price. With $500 in face value, you might be able to get a better deal from a jeweler or coin shop, so check around.

HttpwikianswerscomQWhat is the value of a Benjamin Franklin half dollar collection 1948 to 1963?

Well, with all the mints, there are 35 coins that were produced between those years. A lot of the value is based on the condition of the coins. If the coins are in the poorest condition, then they are only valued at what the spot price of silver is. As of today, February 10, 2009, they are worth $4.75 a piece just for the silver. Depending on the condition, they could be worth anywhere from $4.75 to $15 a piece. Sorry could not be more specific, but your collection is worth somewhere between $175 and $500.
