Each East African country (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda) has its own currency, each called the shilling as through most of the 20th Century. The old East African shilling was tied to the British pound, which in the 1960s was valued at $2.80, or 14 U.S. cents to the dollar. Thus, the E.A. Sh. was valued at 7 to a dollar. As of March 11, 2013, these were the approximate values (the rates vary from bank to bank and bureau du change to bureau du change):

$1 = 1,621 Tanzania shs.; $1 = 86.1 Kenyan shs.; $1 = 2,650.50 Ugandan shs. These rates, compared to the old E.A. sh., do not take into consideration the changes in value or purchasing power of the dollar.
