The wombat's common name is wombat. The scientific name is Vombatus ursinus.
Vombatus ursinus is the scientific name for the common wombat, a marsupial native to Australia. These animals are characterized by their sturdy bodies, short legs, and a distinctive burrowing behavior. Wombats are primarily herbivorous, feeding on grasses and roots, and are known for their unique cube-shaped feces, which helps mark their territory. They are nocturnal and typically live in social groups or solitary, depending on the species and habitat.
People often refer to the koala as "koala bear". This naming is incorrect. It is just called "koala", and the misnomer "koala bear" tends to be applied only by non-Australians.The wombat is the koala's closest relative, and the common wombat's scientific name is Vombatus ursinus which means "bear-like". However, people do not generally call the wombat a bear.

While the early Australian settlers often referred to the wombat as a "badger", it is nothing like a badger. The closest relative to the wombat is the koala. Both creatures have short legs with very sharp claws. Both also share the very unique feature of a backward-facing pouch.
The gestation period of a wombat is 30 days resulting in a single, bean-sized, 1 gram offspring. The joey is blind and crawls from the birth canal, following the smell of its mother's milk into the backwards facing pouch. For the next 7-8 months, the joey is completely dependent on its mother, even for warmth since it cannot control its own body temperature. The joey leaves the pouch permanently at about 10 months, but stays with its mother for a further 5-10 months.
