= Xiphophorus is a genus of Freshwater Fish in family Poeciliidae of order Cyprinodontiformes. The type species is X. hellerii, the green swordtail.=
xiphophorus maculatus
x-ray fish D_;
A Platy is a Platy it is either a Xiphophorus maculatus or X. variatus. Colour does not matter at all. They are all the same species and can interbreed. They can also cross breed with Swordtails (Xiphophorus helleri).
I had some success breeding a male Xiphophorus helleri(swordtail) with female Poecilia reticulata (guppies) back in the early 1990's. Although of different genera, these two freshwater aquarium fish are in the same family. Hybridization may be possible, but it is doubtful that the offspring will be able to reproduce.
If you are asking about the marine Swordfish they are "Xiphias gladius" if you are asking about the tropical livebearing Swordtail, then the species is "Xiphophorus helleri".
Platys are Xiphophorus sp. Mollys are Poecilia sp. As you can see they are of entirely different species and so obviously they can not breed with one another.
No they are entirely different species and can not cross breed. Mollies are Poecilia sp. and Swordtails and Plattys are Xiphophorus sp. To cross them would be like crossing a dog with a cow.
If you supply more information on your water parameters (pH, GH, temp and tank size) it may be possible to make an informed guess what happened to your (Micky mouse fish). It is a Platy (Xiphophorus maculatus) and is a livebearer so it is possible that she died giving birth.
You can cross breed any fish that have a common family (Taxonomic) name. All the different types of guppy (Poecilia reticulata) can be bred with one another. Any kind of Platty (Xiphophorus maculatus)can be crossed with any other kind of Platty but Guppies could not be bred with Plattys because they are totally different species.
A Platy is a Platy is a Platy.(Xiphophorus maculatus variatus) The fancy name makes no difference. The gestation period for a Platy is about 3 to 4 weeks under perfect conditions but can take up 3 or 4 months if conditions are not to the fishes liking. If conditions are really bad she can refuse to let them out and they will be still born eventually (sometimes this kills her).
Platys (Xiphophorus sp.) are livebearing fish so the eggs hatch internally. The gestation time can be controlled (increased) up to a certain extent by the female depending upon her prevailing conditions. The fastest time I know of is 4 weeks and the longest 3 months.
Swordtail freshwater tropical or what? Freshwater ones don't lay eggs they give birth to live fry you can tell when they are pregnant because of the fact they get fatter and if you look at the stomach area you can see black dots.
