There is only one spinal cord (not multiple-- you said "cords"). It is made up of bundles of nerve fibers -- 31 pairs of spinal nerves. The spinal cord is soft tissue and houses nerves, but it doesn't really "protect" anything. I am wondering if you mean to ask what protects the spinal cord? If so, that would be the meninges, which are connective tissue membranes. They separate the soft tissue of the central nervous system (the brain & spinal column) from the bones of the vertebrae and skull. There are three layers to the meninges with spaces in between. They are protective layers and are refered to as "Maters" meaning "mother" (get it??...protective mothers). The outer most layer is called the Dura Mater (meaning "strong mother") -- the strongest layer. There is then an epidural space leading to the Arachnoid mater (web like-mother) -- loose mesh of collagenous protective fibers. Then there is the subarachnoid space leading to the Pia Mater (small mother) -- thin membrane closest to the spinal cord. I will watch this post to make sure I answered your question right since the way it is written is questionable.

The spinal cord is protected by the vertebrae.

Yes
Membranes called meninges cover and protect the brain and spinal cord. The skull and spinal column also protect the brain and spinal cord, respectively. The spinal cord is made up by individual vertebrae.
The spinal cord is protected by the vertebras that make up the spine. Heart and lungs are mainly protected by the ribs and the sternum.
The spinal cord is protected by the vertebrae, meninges, and CSF (cerebrospinal fluid)
The human spinal cord is protected by the bony spinal column. The spinal column is made up of bones called vertebrae. The spinal cord itself is made of neurons, similar to the brain itself.
Your brain is protected by bone which is your skull. Your spinal cord is also protected by bone known as vertebrae. Actually in the biology textbook it is called cerebrospinal fluid.

The spinal cord is the main pathway for information connecting the brain and peripheral nervous system. The human spinal cord is protected by the bony spinal column. The bodies nervous system passes information for the bodies functions from the brain through the spinal cord via a massive network of nerves
