The name of the island was Hispaniola or La Española which was a temporary name given back in the days to avoid conflicts but now Both owners of the island Republic of Haiti and Dominican Republic have agreed to call the island Santo Domingo which also happens to be the name of the capital of Dominican Republic which is now called Santo Domingo de Guzman, Distrito Nacional.
