That point is in the South Atlantic Ocean. There are no islands visible anywhere
near it on the maps we usually use when we work this category, so we opened
the vault and brought out the heavy-duty stuff that's usually reserved for super-
close inspection.
The point is in the waters of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. The
nearest islands are:
-- Saunders Island, 23 miles to the northeast
-- Vindication and Candlemas Islands, 64 miles to the north
-- Montagu Island, 36 miles to the southeast
-- Bristol Island, 71 miles to the south-southeast.
By sheer coincidence, we noticed a USGS marker in the sea 142 miles due north
of this point, indicating the epicenter of a magnitude 5.1 earthquake that occurred
just 8 hours before we started working on this question.
