Peninsular Malaysia older name was "Semenanjung Tanah Melayu", literally translated into English as "The Peninsular Land of the Malay". "Semenanjung Tanah Melayu" became "Malaysia" in September 1963 when the states of Sabah and Sarawak (in Borneo island) joined "Semenanjung Tanah Melayu" . Why the old name was "Tanah Melayu" - because the Malay people was the earliest people to establish a system of governance in various part of the "Semenanjung Tanah Melayu". There were already original inhabitants, known as "Orang Asli" (indigeneous people) before the establishment of such governances by the Malay people.
