One striking issue dominating the US and Japan remains the North Korean nuclear weapons program. This issue has died down a bit and the Peoples Republic of China is engaged in talks with North Korea to help solve this.
The trade issues between Japan and the USA have been defused to a large extent by the "inexpensive" labor issues that the USA has with other Asian nations. Both Japan and the USA are facing cost of labor problems of low wage counties. The issue however remains when Japanese imports cannot be properly taxed because parts and labor costs incurred by Japanese corporations by using low wage nations cannot be tracted by the IRS.
