In silent night when rest I took,
For sorrow near I did not look,
I wakened was with thund'ring noise
And Piteous shrieks of dreadful voice.
That fearful sound of fire and fire,
Let no man know is my Desire.
When she was sleeping
Having a feeling something bad might happen
She woke up startled with loud noises
And heard sad yells of Horror
Hearing someone yell fire, fire
Don't let anyone how she truly felt
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I, starting up, the light did spy,
And to my God my heart did cry
To strengthen me in my Distress
And not to leave me succor less.
Then coming out beheld a space,
The flame consume my dwelling place.
She got up seeing the fire
Crying out for God
To make her stronger and indifferent
And give her some kind of relief
She came outside and stood
And saw her house burning down
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And, when I could no longer look,
I blest his Name that gave and took,
That laid my goods now in the dust:
Yea so it was, and so 'twas just.
It was his own: it was not mine;
Far be it that I should repine.
She looked until she couldn't look anymore
Blessed the name of the lord, he took what he had given
This led all her things to burn and turn to dust
It was his things so it was just
It was Gods and not mine
So she has no right to complain

He might have all justly bereft,
But yet sufficient for us left.
When by the ruin oft I past,
My sorrowing eyes aside did cast,
And here and there the places spy
Where oft I sat, and long did lie.
God deprived them or desirables
But left them their necessary
Walking by her house's ruin
Her sad eyes did see
Here and there things that used to be
Where she used to sit and sleep
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here stood that Trunk, and there that chest;
There lay that store I counted best:
My pleasant things in ashes lie,
And them behold no more shall I.
Under thy roof no guest shall sit,
Nor at thy Table eat a bit.
She recognized where her trunk stood and her chest
Where she used to keep the best of her things
Her pleasant things burnt and ashes
And she will never see them again
And no guest will sit under her roof
And no one will ever even eat a bit at her table
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
No pleasant tale shall 'ere be told,
Nor things recounted done of old.
No Candle 'ere shall shine in Thee,
Nor bridegroom's voice ere heard shall bee.
In silence ever shalt thou lie;
Adieu, Adieu; All's vanity.
No sweet words will be spoken there
And no old memories will be recalled
No candles will shine there
No one will ever hear her husband's voice
He will forever be silent
Good bye good bye; everything is temporary
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then straight I 'gin my heart to chide,
And didst thy wealth on earth abide?
Didst fix thy hope on mold'ring dust,
The arm of flesh didst make thy trust?
Raise up thy thoughts above the sky
That dunghill mists away may fly.
She scolds herself; having trouble accepting her loss
Questioning herself whether her true wealth live
Did she have hope for all those things that are now dust?
Did she believe that she had any power to do anything?
She should get rid of these thought
These worthless thought should fly away like dunghill mists

Thou hast an house on high erect
Framed by that mighty Architect,
With glory richly furnished,
Stands permanent though' this be fled.
It's purchased, and paid for too
By him who hath enough to do.
She knows her real home is in heaven
That God has created for her
fully furnished and glorified
that house will stand for while this house didn't
her house is bought and paid for in full
by God who does so much

A price so vast as is unknown,
Yet, by his Gift, is made thine own.
There's wealth enough, I need no more;
Farewell my Pelf, farewell my Store.
The world no longer let me Love,
My hope and Treasure lies Above
The price of the house is so expensive its unknown
Yet from God it was given to her
She will be given so much wealth she won't need a cent more
She says bye to her riches (pelf) on earth and says farewell to her house
She no longer can love these worldly things
Because everything she ever wanted or need lies in heaven
No pleasant tale shall 'ere be told,
Nor things recounted done of old.
No Candle 'ere shall shine in Thee,
Nor bridegroom's voice ere heard shall bee.
In silence ever shalt thou lie;
Adieu, Adieu; All's vanity.
No sweet words will be spoken there
And no old memories will be recalled
No candles will shine there
No one will ever hear her husband's voice
He will forever be silent
Good bye good bye; everything is temporary
The whole thing looks good but in this stanza. These two lines are wrong:
Nor bridegroom's voice ere heard shall bee.
In silence ever shalt thou lie;
No one will ever hear her husband's voice
He will forever be silent
We went over it in English class and the poem is correct but the translation is wrong.
The translation is:
"No one will ever hear her husband's voice in their house
The house will lay there silently forever."
Her husband didn't die.
The translation insinuates he died.
The turning point is on line 37 for the reason that she letting go of all her pain
The elegy laments death. The elegy poem typically speaks about the grief that one feels after a loved one dies. It does not always have to be about the death of a person however. An example of this is "Verses upon the Burning of our House" in which Anne Bradstreet laments the death of her home.
