Emily Dickinson never had a job other than writing poetry. She did help with all the work of a large 19th-century household, rising before dawn every day to make the fires, prepare the family breakfast, and look after the conservatory and garden. Later in life, along with her sister Latvinia, she took care of her dying mother.
