It depends on the country, and whether rural or city. In 1914, cars were not owned by everyone. There were electric streetcars in some cities and towns. Boys and men worked in coal mines, steel mills, as hucksters (people who drove from neighborhood to neighborhood selling wares), deliverers, sales clerks, farmers, farm hands, laborers, watchmakers, millers, journeymen, painters... most of the same or similar jobs to today. Girls and women took in wash, sewing, and ironing.
