The nobles themselves would not see it as a 'job' (if only because they did not get a salary) but as an 'occupation'. Noble occupations were: running parts of the king's realm as a fief, fighting as a knight in the King's army or being courtier/counsellor to the King. For younger sons of nobles, becoming abbot, bishop or cardinal was also a 'noble' occupation.
