What keeps aeroplanes in the sky?

The wings of the plane keep the plane in the sky.The wings deflect air downward. As described by Newton's 3rd law of motion, this causes an upward force on the wing, and therefore on the airplane as a whole, keeping it aloft.

Note that a source of energy is required to keep the airplane moving forward, and therefore making the wings deflect air downward. In powered flight, this energy source is the engine(s). However, a glider stays aloft by trading some amount of altitude, and therefore gravitational potential energy, for forward motion and the consequent lift.
