epiglottis
the small flap is called the Epiglottis :)
jaquasia
The uterus keeps the trachea from collapsing in a fetal pig.
During swallowing, the epiglottis covers the glottic opening to prevent aspiration of food or fluids into the lungs.
What keeps the trachea open are small cartilage ring, called cricoid cartilage.
The trachea has a series of cartilage rings that prevent it from collapsing.
The thin muscular flap that keeps food from entering the trachea is the Epiglottis.
cartilage rings
The Epiglottis
It is the epiglottis.
The cartilage rings in the trachea prevent the trachea from collapsing during absence of air and also protect it.These cartilagenous ring are C shaped and are meant for particular purposes such as:they give support and strength to the tracheathey prevent from collapsing and breakingalso cartilage contain much collagen fibres which are stress resistantthey don't allow the trachea to shrink
Two things hold the trachea open 1. air pressure 2. Cartilidge rings that the trachea is made of catilaginous rings. If a patient has had a tracheostomy and the cannula (the plastic device that keeps the trachea open) is removed, the area is covered with gauze and will close on its own in time.
