Valves in your heart keep out the backwash of "dirty" blood, therefore it only travels from right to left to be "cleaned" and oxidized by the lungs. Once oxidized, it returns to the rest of the body and thus, back into the heart. Repeat!

Heart has 4 valves in it. On right side of atrium and ventricle, you have right atrio-ventricular valve also called tricuspid valve. Which has three cusps in it. It direct unidirectional flow from right atrium to right ventricle. From right ventricle blood flows to pulmonary circulation via pulmonary valve. On left side you have left atrio-ventricular valve called as bicuspid valve also called Mitral valve. Blood flows from left atrium to left ventricle via this valve. From left ventricle blood flows to systemic circulation via left aortic valve. So flow is unidirectional and that is the function of valves.
