Inertia. Newton's fist law states that an object that is moving will keep moving until somethings slows it down. Since there is virtually no friction in space, nothing causes the planets to slow down, so they continue to orbit.

There's a "balance" among all planets relatively to the mass of the Sun. Bigger mass attracts smaller mass. What keeps a planet orbiting around the Sun, is the "needing" of maintaining that "balance", so the only way the planets have to keep the solar system in accordance to the difference of masses and consequent difference of power gravity, is by orbiting around the Sun. This movement of all planets and moons compensates the difference of mass and power gravity among them.
