Well, when she was brought up Poland was under Russian rule. Her parents were Polish patriots and it got them into a bit of trouble. Maries father had a very hard time finding work, and her mother died. She had to work at 16 as a governess to pay for her sisters education and when she finally reached Sorbonne Iniversity, worked in terrible conditions. Also, when she discovered radium, most scientists didn't believe her so she had to prove it. Later on, rumors were made up about her breaking up her sisters and husbands marrige.
