Many earlier "Cable Ready" TVs are that way. Only the newer and more expensive sets had the 3 line audio/ video connectors

I don't know of any TVs that have an OPTICAL OUT on the back. The connector for this kind of connection has a locking type socket, and will only go in 1 way.

The new ones do not have a phone cable cord it is an ethernet cable and the plug is large than a phone cable jack and only looks similar. PS2 added the ethernet when the new model PS2 slim was released

is it a straight ethernet or a crossover? i am using a Motorola SURFboard SB5120. You'll only need a straight ethernet cable for that.
Basically, you have to plug in a ethernet cable from your Cable or DSL modem to the ps2 ethernet port on the back of the machine. Only certain games are playable on-line.
