methanol
Non-alcoholic drinks.
All alcoholic drinks contain the same kind of alcohol: ethanol (C6H5OH). It is the amount of alcohol in the drink that matters, not what kind of drink.
There is only one kind of alcohol in alcoholic drinks. That is ethyl alcohol.
Ethanol (drinking alcohol). Any other forms of alcohol (there are many) can be poisonous to people (particularly methanol). Don't drink alcohol unless you know what kind it is.
Mercury thermometers are used domestically because they are reliable, have a wide temperature range, and are easy to read. Alcoholic thermometers are used in labs because they are non-toxic and can measure a wide range of temperatures accurately. Additionally, they have a lower risk of shattering compared to mercury thermometers.
Ethanol (the kind of alcohol that people drink).
Alcohol thermometers use a liquid such as ethanol to measure temperature based on the expansion of the liquid, while digital thermometers use electronic sensors to detect temperature changes and provide a numerical reading. Digital thermometers tend to be more accurate and easier to read than alcohol thermometers.
There are 34 different types of thermometer that range from alcohol thermometers and ear thermometers to medical thermometers and electrical resistance thermometers.
Mercury and alcohol (typically ethanol or dyed alcohol) are two liquids that have been commonly used in thermometers. Mercury is often used in industrial thermometers due to its high thermal conductivity, while alcohol is used in household thermometers for safety reasons.
