Not sure how many he sold exactly, but he painted around 1,000 oil paintings in his lifetime and the bulk of them where sold. A small number where given away (including his most famous: The Persistence of Memory) and others where early life works that only became of value years later.
During his career (1920's to 1970's) Dali would always sell a work. He couldn't paint them quick enough to meet demand. His fellow surrealists coined the anagram 'Avida Dollars' for him as a result.
