It's a common misconception that Dali painted once painted his body with human feces (where this rumor started is the subject of many a debate in the modern art history world).

A small number where given away (including his most famous: The Persistence of Memory) and others where early life works that only became of value years later. During his career (1920's to 1970's) Dali would always sell a work. He couldn't paint them quick enough to meet demand. His fellow surrealists coined the anagram 'Avida Dollars' for him as a result.

Like many famous artists Dali hade the creative urge - he just must create artworks!
