There is no special equipment needed specifically to catch carp. The usual rod, reel, and bait is all that is really needed, as this fish will pretty much eat anything.

This sounds stupid but it works. Mash a piece of bread on your hook and form into a tight ball, then pour big red on it. This should have a weight attached to get it to the bottom.
