If it looks like a Cardinal because it is red all over, it may be a Summer Tanager. That would be a wonderful bird to see, because it is another one that is being driven to extinction by loss of where it has to live both in summer and winter. People who do not know what a bird species is, usually do not know how to see a bird to know what species it is, and so cannot explain enough for someone else to say what it is.

The loss of the gene coding for an orange crest in the bird population is an example of genetic drift, specifically a founder effect or a bottleneck effect, depending on the context. This phenomenon occurs when random events cause certain alleles to be lost from the gene pool, leading to reduced genetic variation. Consequently, traits like the orange crest may disappear entirely from the population over generations.

The black bellied plover is a bird that has a black stripe down its throat joining a black belly that is bordered by white brown speckled all over and is about as big as a lapwing. It is typically found in Massachusetts and British Columbia.
The red "crest" is called the comb. The comb is a cooling organ that allows blood close to the surface of the skin of the bird to allow for air movement over the blood flowing through it. Wattles work the same way. Birds do not sweat. Sweating uses water the bird cannot afford to lose.
