The patella, also known as the kneecap, is a sesamoid bone. Sesamoid bones are bones that are embedded within tendons and provide protection and mechanical advantage to that tendon. The patella is located within the quadriceps tendon and acts as a fulcrum to increase the leverage of the quadriceps muscles during knee extension.
Osteocytes require a specialized form of circulation through small channels called canaliculi to effectively exchange nutrients, waste, and signaling molecules with the surrounding bone matrix and blood supply. Unlike other cells, osteocytes are embedded within mineralized bone and are not directly exposed to blood vessels. This unique circulation system allows them to maintain bone homeostasis, respond to mechanical stress, and communicate with other bone cells, ensuring the overall health and remodeling of bone tissue.
There is yellow bone marrow and red bone marrow.
