I am old enough to actually remember the 1950's. It was customary for men and women to wear hats when outdoors, no matter the weather (I now wear a hat only in very cold weather). Men's pants had cuffs on them. Clothing was much less varied than it is today, almost as if the whole population was in uniform (but not quite). People did not wear bluejeans unless they worked on a farm. Other than that, clothing of the 1950's was not basically different from clothing today; only the styles have changed. People still wore shirts, pants, dresses, shoes, etc. In fact, any clothing from the 1950's can still be worn today, without exciting any particular shock or offense. It would just be considered a retro look.
