The origin of the word "cologne" is in the Latin language of the Romans. Although the word "cologne" is French in structure and spelling, the city for which it is named lies in Germany, and in German is called "Koln." (There should be a diacritic over the "o" in Koln.) If you pronounce the "gn" in cologne as you would in "lasgna," and make the "e" long, the word will come out very much sounding like the word "colony," and that is what the origin is. "Cologne," or "Koln" was a colony established centuries ago by the Romans on the Rhine River. The water from this area was much later used to make a perfume which became very famous. As you may know, "eau de cologne" translates from French as "water of cologne." We could say, then, "water from the colony" is how this kind of perfume got its name.
