No the bassist is. Clifford Lee Burton (Feb 10, 1962 - Sep 27, 1986) was a bass guitarist with Metallica from 1982 until his death in 1986 also lars had some health problems but he is fine now

However a few likely explanations is that he is getting older, does not practise enough and that he was never really able to play as well as the drumming on the albums. Much can be done in a studio and Flemming Rasmussen(the producer of ...and justice for all, among others) is rumoured to have said "the recording of ...and justice for all would have taken 3 months less if Lars Ulrich could play the drums"
