SOUND
Mechanical waves are produced when some kind of energy moves a substance, a material, or a "thing" within a medium that will conduct the mechanical energy of motion away from the source. And example of this would be a speaker, which takes an electrical signal and moves some kind of diaphragm with it. The diaphragm will move air or another fluid around it, and the sound waves will radiate from the device. If used in the vacuum of space, a speaker would be ineffective at transferring sound (mechanical) energy.
