The very first appearances of a "pet" dog (twice, both closely resembling Bloodhounds) belonging to either Mickey or Minnie Mouse occurred in two 1930 Mickey Mouse Cartoons. In 1931 the same dog reappeared and was given the name Pluto, thereafter officially joining Mickey's usual cast of characters.

Though the character art has evolved, it is most likely that Pluto was originally intended to be a Bloodhound, as evinced by the long, droopy ears, wrinkly face, thin whip tail, and slightly bowlegged, ungainly limbs. However, Mickey Mouse claims that Pluto is just a mutt.

The 1951 R'Coon Dawg cartoon proves that Pluto was intended to be a Redbone Coonhound, a breed similar to the Bloodhounds but with much less skin.
