A key animator draws the most extreme poses of a character: the start pose, the end pose and any poses that show a dramatic change. (picking up a rock, tossing it playfully into the air a couple of times, the wind-up and the release of the thrown rock)

An in-betweener creates the drawings that fill the gaps in-between the key poses so that the motion appears smooth.
