Everyone thinks Dolphus is an alcohol abuser, but he really just makes everyone believe that as an excuse for the way he lives. He enjoys the company of Negroes, has mixed children and kind of lives on the side of things. This part in the book shows how the people of Maycomb are so racist that people like Dolphus have to lie to have a bit of peace. Instead of criticizing him for his un-hatred of Negroes, they criticize him for his drinking.
Dolphus Raymond is misjudged because he simply married a black woman...in the 1930s...in Alabama. But he makes up for it by pretending to be a drunk. Whenever he's in town he carries a paper sack with a bottle inside that he's always drinking out of. People think he's an alcoholic and let that explain his interracial marriage. In reality it's Coca-Cola in his bottle. He lets the white people think he's an alcoholic because he can't stand their ridicule and know they would never understand why he married a black woman: because he loves her and her culture.
PBR or Budweiser but he really didn't much drink beer.
Well, to tell you the truth, if it helps at all, Tom Robinson is really portrayed as the mockingbird in the book. This is because killing a mockingbird is a sin, and since Tom was innocent it was a "sin" to kill him, and the man who was responsible (Bob Ewell) died.
He is a character in To Kill a Mocking Bird.
Mr. Raymond pretended to drink alcohol to give the community an explanation for his actions. By allowing people to believe he was a drunk, he could avoid judgment for his unconventional lifestyle, which included being in a relationship with a Black woman. It was a way for him to live according to his own beliefs without facing as much scrutiny from the community.
