Some swan ducklings are born with a dingy brownish-gray color, but in actuality, they're not ugly. They are quite adorable. The Ugly Duckling was a fable to teach children to be confident in who they are and not judge a book by its cover.

The moral of the story is that even when you think you are ugly or people are mean to you telling you that you are ugly, you will blossom into a beautiful adult. The other meaning is that it is the beauty within that counts. Then the other meaning is beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The main problem with the Ugly Duckling story is that the other ducks, who judged the 'duckling', can only be shown to be wrong when the 'duckling' becomes more attractive aesthetically. I'd say maybe the duckling should stay ugly and become appreciated for it's personality, as the former is not a great message to teach kids; 'Don't judge a book by it's cover, because it's cover may change for the better' isn't really a great moral.
