There were two main engines that 98 neons had.
The first was the SOHC which stands for Single OverHead Cam.
The second was the DOHC which stands for the Dual OverHead Cam. Both engines are 2.0L 4 cylinder fuel injected modern engines with aluminum heads.
The SOHC power output is 132hp/129tq
The DOHC power output is 150hp/133tq
The DOHC was standard on Competition(2 door), R/T(2 & 4 door) and Sport Coupes(2 & 4 door).
The SOHC was standard on Competition(4 door) and the Highline(2 & 4 door). So the engine you have depends on the model and if the optional engine wasn't chosen when ordering one of the models that came with a SOHC. Edit: I forgot to mention that the cars that came with a DOHC had a bulge in the hood while the SOHC cars had a flat hood. If the hood was changed or the car was in an accident then it is an unreliable way to tell.
