While he was in Cathay, he became a favorite of Kublai Khan, the Mongol Emperor. For 17 years, he explored China and Mongolia. He was the first European to travel so far into China. Finally he went back home after taking a ride to Persia. Marco Polo was gone for a total of 24 years.His trip to China: While Marco Polo was in China Kublai Khan become interested in their manners and customs from Europe. He became very fond of Marco. He invited Marco, Uncle Maffeo, and Niccolo into the palace. Important positions were given to Marco's uncle and father so they lived in Cathay for some years.There was a battle between Genoa and Venice in 1298. Marco was the captain for the Venetians so the Genoese captured him and put him behind bars. While in prison, he wrote the book "Description of the World" and it was published later on. He was released in 1299 and then returned home to the city of Venice. He never traveled again. He was still known as popular by telling all his stories of his adventures.Extra Facts: Marco Polo introduced silk and gunpowder to the west.
