Tribes can be organized into subgroups based on variations in lifeways and corresponding regions. The Kiskiaks are among the Algonquian Indians. Algonquian tribes span over a large region of the Eastern Coast of the US. While longhouses were sometimes used among the Algonquians, longhouses were much more common among Iroquoian tribes as housing. Algonquians (Kiskiaks included) were more adept to using wigwams. Wigwams were smaller circular homes for nuclear families. However, longhouses did usually exist as well but in those villages they usually served council or ceremonial purposes.

The Siksikáwa or Blackfoot people were typical northern Plains nomads who followed the buffalo herds but who also hunted other game animals. They therefore used typical Plains tipi-style lodges called moyis in Blackfoot.

The Blackfoot tribes had access to pine poles for the framework of the tipi; four of these were tied together and the other poles were laid loose against this base. A semicircular cover made of brain-tanned buffalo hides was then pulled over the poles and fixed together with sharp wooden pins down the front.

Normally between 12 and 20 hides were used to make the cover.
