The Baron Karl Drais von Sauerbronn invented the "running machine", a precursor to the bicycle, in 1818. It did not have any kind of drive system, like today's bicycles, but resembles a bicycle in nearly every other way. The rider would straddle the machine and use his feet to push it along.
