The Republic of Ireland uses the Euro, made up of 100 cents and Northern Ireland uses the Pound Sterling, made up of 100 pennies.

The Republic of Ireland is part of the European Union and has adopted the Euro as its currency in common with many other members of the Union. In contrast Northern Ireland which is, for the time being, part of the United Kingdom continues to use the Pound Sterling as the UK has not adopted the Euro as its currency.

Nearly a thousand years (from 997 to 1928)

12 pence = 1 shilling • 20 shillings = 1 pound

After 1928 they had their own names for coins ...

Feoirling/Farthing · Pingin/Penny · Scilling/Shilling · Flóirin/Florin

Coróin/Crown · Punt/Pound

The same from 1928 to 1971

12 pence = 1 shilling • 20 shillings = 1 pound (see below)

From 1971 to 2001

100 pence = 1 pound

In 2002 the Euro was introduced

100 cents = 1 euro
