A thermohaline current is a gravity current. It is driven by gravity. The root idea is that fluids of different densities are acted on differently by gravity, and gravity "pulls" more on more dense fluids. That means cooler or more salty water, which is more dense than warmer or less salty water, will be "pulled down" more, and will displace the warmer or less salty and "dive deep" to set up deep ocean currents.
