Higher quality newspapers are made from paper made from wood pulp.

Lower quality newspapers and newspapers that are environmentally friendly use recycled paper.

You can tell the difference by the texture. Wood pulp papers are generally smooth while recycled paper newspapers are generally rougher.

Although wood pulp papers are better quality and less likely to wear and tear, because of their smoothness the ink usually rubs off, particularly if the paper is warm.

So, technically, low quality recycled paper is actually better for a newspaper than high quality wood pulp.

These days you are more likely to pick up a newspaper made with recycled material.
