The role of the Flute in a band is an important one, and is present in all Marching Bands. They are used to give higher pitches for the ensemble, and it is also easier for flute players to do a complicated run than for other brass instruments.

if you mean in a band, as in with other insturments other then flutes, the flute typically plays the melodies. These tend to be higher pitched and also are the most fun to play.
