∙ 11y agoThe people of Pompeii were the typical people of the average ancient town. There were the rich, the poor, the professionals, the shop owners and so forth. What makes Pompeii so interesting is that the ash has preserved not only the bodies, but the buildings and everyday tools and equipment that people used. Items found on or near bodies also gave insight as to what people valued and tried to take with them during their flight. The site of Pompeii was the first actual look that archaeologists and historians had into the lives of everyday Romans. All other information before the discovery of Pompeii came down to us from the elite who wrote nothing about the average Gaius or Marcus.
