In 1284 the town suffered a rat infestation and a piper dressed in multicoloured clothes appeared and for a fee agreed to rid the town (such clothes being known as 'pied'). The piper accepted, removed the rats but then the town refused to pay. As a result 130 children were lured out of the town by the piper, never to be seen again
