Ireland is a democratic country. It has a number of main political parties including Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, The Labour Party, Sinn Féin and others. Members of these parties are elected to the Irish parliament, known as Dáil Éireann. Independents, who are people that don't belong to any political party, also stand for election and there are a number of those in Dáil Éireann too. There is also a second house, known as Seanad Éireann. The head of the government is known as the Taoiseach. The role is similar to that of a prime minister in other countries. Ireland also has a president, who is the head of state.
