I'd hardly classify what the KKK did as mere "pranks". Their actions would be better termed intimidation, harassment, assault, and/or terrorism. One of the claimed reasons for the famous white hoods and robes was to make them resemble ghosts and "spooks" to try to "prank" supposedly gullible and superstitious free blacks - but the reality is that they were mainly used to disguise their identities while carrying out violence and threats such as planting burning crosses in the yards of blacks to intimidate them with implied future violence.
