In the 1800's after Napoleon came to power he came up with a set of codes that are still in place in France today. They are called the Napoleonic code. According to Wikipedia the code is set into three categories

The Napoleonic Code was based on earlier French laws as well as Roman law, and followed Justinian's Corpus Juris Civilis in dividing civil law into: # personal status; # property; # acquisition of property.
