Mass is a fundamental property (along with charge, distance and time)

On Earth, we know gravity causes objects to accelerate downwards at 9.81 metres per second per second [SIC].

Knowing this, we can define the Newton to be "The force due to gravity on an object of mass 1kg". Using a calibrated Newtonmeter, we can find the object's weight in Newtons, then divide it by 9.81 (Since W=MG, M=W/G) to find the mass, in kilogramms.

Another way to measure mass is with a Mass Spectrometer. This is quite complicated to explain, and there is more information available at the following page:
