Lutra lutra, the Eurasian otter, generally uses two types of shelter: a couch and a Holt.
A couch is a place usually under an overhanging root tangle in the bank of a river this could be scraped out or more often than not due to erosion, e.g. water washes away soil but not roots leaving a comfy place for the otter. The couch is used to rest on journeys and to hide from view. They generally have many of these in their home territory and know how to slip into one silently should danger come.
A Holt is a hole, generally dug into the bank. This is where they give birth and sleep if possible. They can consist of one or two chambers.
If you are talking about captive otters, a nest box can be used, but an artificial Holt would be more beneficial and are quite easy to make.
In 2008, the IUCN listed them as "Near Threatened" with the population in decline.
